He arrived in Table Bay on 23 January 1751 as a soldier in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), having sailed aboard the Rozenburg. He obtained his freedom as a burgher in 1756, thereafter becoming a businessman. He also served as a captain of the Burgher Militia at the Cape.]

After the nomination had been submitted in our meeting today, and in place of the retiring Orphan Masters, Johannes Matthias Bletterman, Johan Adolph Kwuchl, and Jan Coenraad Gie were re-elected to this office together with Abraham Chiron, Adam Gabriel Muller, and Hendrik Justinus de Wet. After the first-mentioned had taken the prescribed oath, they were to serve in this capacity for the ordinary term of office.

Following the reading of the nominations of elected elders and nominated deacons of the church councils, both at the Cape and in the outlying districts, approval was granted regarding the elders. From the double nomination, the following election was made in the Reformed Church at the Cape, Pieter Domus and Jan Coenraad Gie were elected as elders in place of the outgoing Oloff Godlieb de Vet and the deceased Andries van Siteert.

Michiel Coenraad Gie of the Cape of Good Hope, serving as an assistant on reduced salary, married Elsabe Antoinetta Jacoba Le Febre, widow of the late Captain Henry Sheuron. Elsabe was previously also the widow of André Urbain de Lenipe of Nyon, Switzerland. She was the daughter of Jacobus Alexander Le Febre and Christina Jacoba de Wet, on 23 Jan 1791 in Cape Town Neder Geref Church, Cape of Good Hope. Elsabe was born about 8 Jul 1766 in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope . She was christened  on 16 Feb 1766 in Cape Town Neder Geref Church, Cape of Good Hope. She died  on 28 Jul 1817 in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, age 51yrs 20dys.

Michiel Coenraad Gie, On 12 November 1782 he entered the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a clerk but was later discharged because of poor health. From 1796 he served in the department responsible for land revenues derived from farms and was appointed as a clerk in the magistrate's office at Stellenbosch. During 1800 he was transferred to the Cape Town office.

In October 1804, he was appointed to a special commission tasked with finding a solution to the grain shortage at the Cape. His performance in this role led to his appointment on 29 December 1804 as Receiver-General of Land Revenues, in recognition of his exceptional ability. He held this office until his sudden death in Cape Town on 23 January 1815.
