Carolus Augustus Freislich was born in Danzig and baptised there on 11 December 1738, the son of Johann Balthasar Christian Freislich, a distinguished musical conductor and first organist of the Oberpfarrkirche, and his wife Johanna Justina Louisa. He descended from a respected German musical family; his father having been born at Immanuelborn in the Duchy of Meiningen toward the close of the seventeenth century. Johann Balthasar Christian Freislich established himself as both a composer and performing musician of considerable standing and, while still a young man, received an appointment as Kapellmeister at Sonderhausen before being called to Danzig about 1730.

Carolus Augustus Freislich, [Jnr] entered the service of the Dutch East India Company on 22 October 1758 as a hooploper (assistant to the sailors). At the age of twenty-one he departed from Amsterdam aboard the Scholtenburg, arriving at the Cape of Good Hope on 11 March 1759. Initially employed as a sailor in Company service, Freislich was also trained as a mason and served in that capacity from 1760 to 1762. From 1763 until 1779 he occupied the position of clerk in the artisans’ quarter. After ten years at the Cape, he successfully petitioned for release from his contractual obligations to the Company. In 1780 he obtained his burgher papers and thereafter acted as an authorised representative and agent for various individuals. In 1783 he was appointed as a member of the Lutheran Church Council at the Cape. Freislich remained at the Cape for the remainder of his life and died there on 24 March 1790 while still recorded in Company service. A debt letter (schuldbrief) was noted in his records, although no monthly remittance letter (maandbrief) was recorded.

On 13 October 1765 he married Johanna Margaretha van der Stap, baptised on 12 April 1744, the illegitimate daughter of Jan van der Stap of Utrecht and Johanna Elisabeth van Hoorn, herself the daughter of Robbert Jansz van Hoorn of Bommel. Their marriage was blessed with nine children.
