George, a German Jew, a financier and mining magnate was the oldest son of Simon and Fanny STERNBERG from Berlin. He attended a public school and began his career in the business world at a trading firm.
Fuelled by a thirst for adventure, in 1876 he follows his younger brother Leopold ALBU [1860-1937] to South Africa. On arrival in Cape Town, George became an assistant at the haberdashery counter in Stuttafords, for a while. Departed in the same year to Kimberley. In partnership with his younger brother Leopold he became a diamond-agent. In 1877 he became a diamond seller. The two brothers expanded their business by purchasing claims at Jagersfontein, Bultfontein and Dutoitspan. In 1887 before settling on the Witwatersrand and becoming naturalized Transvaal citizens, the two brothers company was absorbed by de Beers and the two brothers turn their attention to the Witwatersrand Gold Fields.
1903 George was the Vice-Chairman of the Chamber of Mines.
In 1911 Sir George Albu bought the homestead Northwards from Colonel John Dale Lace and wife Josephine, the previous owners of the Parktown mansion, designed by Herbert Baker in 1904.
In 1912 he was made a baronet for the serviced rendered to the mining industry. George and Lady Albu show great interest in the public and social life of Johannesburg, as well as the Jewish population.
According to a description from his time, he was a handsome man, with a rosy complexion, deep piercing eyes, with a dignified demeanour and friendly and amiable disposition.
He died in his impressive residence 'Northward' in Johannesburg.
His title passes to his second son, George Werner as his eldest son Walter George died in 1920.
A grandson succeeded as third baronet in 1963.

George married Gertrude Fredricke Alice ROSENDORFF daughter of Max ROSENDORFF and Emmele on 9 Dec 1888 in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia. Gertrude was born about 1866 in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia. She died on 18 Apr 1950 in 'Bornstead’, Princess of Wales Terrace, Johannesburg,Transvaal. She was buried in Johannesburg Brixton Main Cemetery, Transvaal.

b1. Charlotte Frederika born about 1890. She died on 28 Nov 1965. She was buried in Cape Town Cemetery, Cape Province.

Charlotte married Wilfrid PARKER son of Cecil Thomas PARKER and Rosamond Esther Harriet LONGLEY on 5 Sep 1933 in Johannesburg Anglican Cathedral, Transvaal. Wilfrid was born on 23 Jan 1883 in England. He died on 23 Jun 1966 in Cape Town, Cape Province. He was buried in Cape Town St.Saviours Cemetery, Cape Province.
Wilfrid was employed as Bishop in the Holy Order in 1933 in Pretoria, Transvaal.

b2. Katherine Victoria  “Kitty" was born about 1891 in Johannesburg, Transvaal.

Katherine married Erroll Gordon HAY on 9 Dec 1913 in Doornfontein St Augustine's Church, Johannesburg, Transvaal. Erroll was born on 24 Jan 1881 in Crosley, Lancashire, England. He died on 2 Nov 1964 in Durban Parklands Nursing Home, Natal.
Erroll was employed as a Mining Engineer. He was cremated in 1964 in Durban Crematorium, Natal. He resided in 1964 in Clansthal, Umzinto dist, Lower South Coast, Natal.

b4. Walter George born about 1892 in Johannesburg, Transvaal. He died on 29 May 1920 in Johannesburg General Hospital, Transvaal.  The cause of death was Disease he contracted during World War I.
Walter never married.

Kathleen was born on 31 May 1904. She died on 19 Feb 1956 in Parktown, Johannesburg,Annerley Rd. She was buried in Johannesburg Braamfontein Crematorium, Transvaal.
Kathleen resided in 1924 in 'Two Gates' Oxford Rd, Parktown, Johannesburg, Transvaal.

George married (2) Elsie Violet ALLCOCK on 9 Aug 1958 in Johannesburg Parktown St George's Church, Transvaal. Elsie was born on 10 Mar 1906 in Nottingham, England.
