John CRAVEN was born 6 Aug 1837, Steeton, Yorkshire, England, d. 22 Jun 1890, son of John CRAVEN and Sara Ann CLOUGH, married on 26 May 1870, Harrismith, OFS, to Catharina Helena ROOS b. (=born) 23 Sep 1853, Elandsfontein, Lindley, OFS, d. 18 Nov 1938, Danielsrust, Lindley, OFS, daughter of Cornelis Johannes ROOS b. 1813 and Anna Catharina de WET b. 1819. John Craven junior was a trader and later a farmer.

Dr Daniel Hartman CRAVEN b. 11 Oct 1910, Lindley, Orange Free State, d. 4 Jan 1993, Stellenbosch, the third of seven children, married 2 Jul 1938 (later divorced) to Beyera Johanna HAYWARD b. 1 Jun 1914, d. 2007, daughter of George HAYWARD. Second marriage 30 May 1975 to Martha Jacoba Maria COETZEE.
Quoting from Lucas Rinken’s eSAGI v6.0: Daniel (Danie) Hartman CRAVEN:
“South African Sportsman. President of the South African Rugby Board. Educated at University of Stellenbosch and in Europe. Became an outstanding rugby player. In 1931 played for South Africa against Britain, in 1933 and 1937 against Australia, in 1937 against New Zealand and in 1938 captained the South African Team against Britain. During World War II served in the South African Forces as Lieutenant-Colonel, and later joined the staff of the University of Stellenbosch as Professor of Physical Education. Managed several Springbok teams and wrote extensively on rugby.”
Daniel H Craven was accepted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 1997, the first of several South Africans since.

In 1981 Daniel H Craven received the State President's Award for Exceptional Service, as well as the honorary citizenship of the city of Stellenbosch. Daniel H Craven earned doctorates in the fields of ethnology, psychology and physical education, respectively. He was the author of several books as solo and co-author on rugby, including his autobiography.
